building a homestead
Today I am so SO excited to finally be able to introduce you to our new base, Homestead! We've been working on this since March, which honestly feels like a small lifetime ago, and I'm thrilled that it's finally here. Homestead is a worsted weight yarn, with ca. 140m per 95 grams, woollen spun at our mill. We'll have two natural colorways again, similar to Origin, though the natural grey is quite a bit lighter this time around. It's lofty and bouncy and SOFT and I just can't wait to get it on my needles and of course, to share it with all of you. The fiber this time around comes not from hobby shepherds but from a larger flock of merino sheep in a neighbouring area (Marburger Hinterland). It's a little different than Origin, in that we've not saved the (white) wool from being thrown out, but rather intercepted it before it was sold off to a broker and sent overseas to be spun and mixed together with fiber (and who knows what else) from all over the place before being (potentially) imported back here for people to knit with. (Side note: the grey wool would most likely have been thrown away, as it doesn’t have any financial value to the brokers purchasing it. They need white wool that can be dyed to uniform colors) With this yarn, we're solving a slightly different problem in the wool supply chain, but an important one nonetheless.
Quite honestly, friends, it has taken my entire village to help me create this yarn. So before we go any further, I want to pause and say THANK YOU. To Marty of course, my partner in crime, who handles so many things that I just couldn’t imagine doing myself. To Waldi who is our tireless supporter and biggest cheerleader, who tells literally everybody he knows about what we do. To the amazingly talented designers and makers who collaborate with us to tell this story, create pattens, take photos, make kits- you name it. It’s an honor. To every single one of you who follow along, comment, like, buy from us, send me messages of encouragement and just generally stick around. I am so so grateful.
But specifically to my friends, whom I don’t talk about a lot here in this space but who make all of this possible. Who take care of my baby so I can get some work done. Who talk business strategy on the phone with me when I’ve got an issue I need to sort out and give me pep talks when I start wondering if I’m crazy for starting this in the first place. Who place wholesale orders before I even know how to set them up. Who meet random shepherds while going for walks and ask them what they do with their fleeces. Who (quite honestly) lend me large sums of money without even blinking.
Origin I made for myself and for my fellow knitters. But this one? It's for my friends, who don't even knit but who have shown up for me time and again on this journey. It took me many months and a ton of consideration to pick a name for this base. But to me a homestead brings to mind thoughts of a foundation- something you can stand on, a place you can anchor yourself in and come back to again and again. It's home, yes but it's also where you belong. And that’s what, I've tried to create for us with this base. We’re moving beyond our humble Origins (if you will…) to a place where we can support ourselves in a more sustainable way, and hopefully keep inviting more people along on this journey. And I couldn't have done it alone.
Anyways, we've got so many good things planned for the new year that I just can't wait to share more with you about. For now though, we're planning a small holiday update on Thursday December 6th at 7pm CET for those of you who would like to get your hands on this new base before we officially launch it in the new year, or for anyone hoping for some r&s yarn under the tree this year. There will be preview skeins of Homestead (including a sweater's quantity or two) as well as some of the other products we've worked on this past year and even a few holiday specials. Can’t wait to share it them with you!
